My Escape to Arosa-Lenzerheide on the EUROBUS Ski Express

There is a great German word that is not as descriptive as it should be when translated into other languages: der Schweinehund.

Schweinehund is used in sentences such as: "I have to overcome my inner Schweinehund", which translates as: "I have to overcome my weaker self." We all know this feeling when we want to go jogging, file our taxes or tidy our flat. But there are many reasons why you shouldn't get started: it's raining, you're still waiting for a document or Netflix has uploaded a new episode again.

In recent years I have had a bit of an inner Schweinehund when it comes to skiing. Getting up early. Gathering the equipment from all over the flat. Lugging it laboriously to the station. Struggling with poles and skis to find a seat. No storage space, so having to make room for the other passengers. Changing from the train to the bus and hoping that I have everything with me.

I may be exaggerating a little, but let's be honest: there should be a better way that doesn't force me to drive my own car or spend a night in a hotel on the slope. And I have good news: there is a better way! It is the EUROBUS Ski Express, which takes you from a central pick-up point in the city directly to Arosa-Lenzerheide. I took this trip for you, and here is my review.

A warning: you still have to get up early! But once you reach the coach station, things go smoothly from there. In Zurich, the meeting point is right at Hardbrücke station. The seats on the coach are comfortable, and coffee, drinks and free Wi-Fi are on offer. Your ski equipment is stowed in the coach's luggage hold, without being squeezed into a small rack or left on the floor. The best part is that the coach takes you straight to the ski lift without any additional transfer.

On a February weekend, I finally defeated my inner Schweinehund and took the EUROBUS Ski Express directly to Arosa-Lenzerheide. The coach driver greets everyone at the station and helps us load our equipment. Then we set off and I use the journey to catch up on some sleep. Optionally, you can get off at Churwalden, a ski area with morning sun that is connected to Lenzerheide (sunny in the afternoon).

The lift installations in Lenzerheide have recently been modernised and are comfortable. With a large choice of blue, red and black runs, there is skiing for everyone.

If you don't like skiing, you can also choose other winter activities such as tobogganing, winter walking or snowshoeing. If you are hungry, there are also wonderful restaurants (where you might meet some of the locals – or Zurichers pretending to be locals...).

The mountains offer a resource that we in the cities often lack in these foggy winter months: sunlight. Once you have spent your day producing vitamin D, getting home is a piece of cake. At this time, though, other snow lovers have to return to their cars or begin the long journey home with transfers. Do you know that feeling when you are lugging your ski equipment and an ice-cold drop of melted snow lands on the back of your neck and rolls down your back, making you shiver?

No problem for me, as I can lean back in my seat on the EUROBUS and warm my hands with a cup of hot coffee. It is no secret that travellers on the EUROBUS Ski Express walk from the ski lift to the coach in just a few steps and can sit comfortably all the way back to the city. After a day of sun, fresh air and altitude, I use the journey home to sleep even more.
