About the play
A love drama
From 30 June to 14 August 2027, the Ballenberg Landscape Theatre presents "Anne Bäbi Jowäger" after Jeremias Gotthelf. The play tells of love, domination and the courage to stand up against a predetermined path in life. The well-known actress Doro Müggler can be seen in the role of Anne Bäbi Jowäger. Gerhard Meister is the author of the stage adaptation, and the director is Livio Andreina.
Plot
Anne Bäbi Jowäger knows exactly what she wants: only ever the best. And she pursues it relentlessly. For others too – and especially for her only son Jakob, who is almost destroyed by his mother's overpowering love. But what happens when the son defies his mother's will? Does not want to marry the woman his mother has chosen for him? And instead secretly falls in love with someone else?
In short: what happens when Anne Bäbi would have to give way, something she finds harder than death itself. Then the great drama begins. Then everything goes topsy-turvy. Until at last there is no other way out, and she has to let her son have his way. The woman at Jakob's side turns out to be someone other than Anne Bäbi had planned. And the story takes yet another new, surprising turn.
Production
"Anne Bäbi Jowäger" brings one of Jeremias Gotthelf's best-known characters to the stage. Livio Andreina's production combines Gotthelf's love drama with the impressive atmosphere of Ballenberg. Amid the historic buildings of the open-air museum, the audience encounters a timeless story about family expectations, personal freedom and the question of how much letting go true love demands.
AnnaMaria Glaudemans is responsible for the set and costume design. The music by Annika Johanna Sirkiä and Beat Unternährer accompanies the story and gives the conflicts, emotions and dramatic twists a sound of their own.
Venue
The Swiss Open-Air Museum Ballenberg is a unique place for conveying rural culture. This year's theatre production "Anne Bäbi Jowäger" is staged in front of the historic farmhouse from Eggiwil BE. The building and the surrounding landscape create an incomparable setting for Gotthelf's story.
