Day 1: Switzerland - Frankfurt
Journey to Frankfurt am Main. Arrival at around 14:00. Enjoy a stroll through the city's shopping streets and department stores. As dusk falls, a festive mood settles over the Christmas market. The more than 200 lavishly decorated stalls glow brightly, giving the picturesque Römerberg a fairytale appearance. A Christmas market was first documented in Frankfurt in 1393. In the Middle Ages, Christmas did not yet have the folkloric significance it has today. Back then, it gave townspeople the opportunity to stock up on necessities before the harshest part of winter began. Today, the Frankfurt Christmas market stretches from the Zeil via the Liebfrauenberg, the Neue Kräme, the Paulsplatz, the Römerberg and the Fahrtor to the Mainkai.
Day 2: Frankfurt - Switzerland
Make the most of the morning for a stroll around the city and some sightseeing. The return journey to Switzerland departs at 13:30 via Karlsruhe.
Shopping in Frankfurt
Frankfurt more than lives up to its reputation as a cosmopolitan city when it comes to shopping, too. Arcades, large department stores, trendy shops and exclusive boutiques compete for shoppers' favour. Here you will find luxury goods, international top fashion and well-known labels. The Zeil shopping gallery is particularly popular. Numerous smaller, lovingly run shops complete the offering.

The Christmas market
The Frankfurt Christmas market is located in the middle of the city centre and spreads across several central squares, all easily reachable on foot. At its heart is the Römerberg with its large Christmas tree and particularly atmospheric historic setting. Directly adjacent is the Paulsplatz, which has a more open layout and is often used for events or stage programmes. Along the Mainkai, a quieter part of the market runs alongside the river Main, offering a special atmosphere above all in the evening thanks to the lighting. The market also extends to the Hauptwache and along the Zeil, where the Christmas offering blends with the city centre's shopping opportunities. All areas are only a few minutes' walk apart, so the entire Christmas market is easy to explore on foot.
