Day 1: Switzerland – Speyer – Mainz
Travel via Basel to Strasbourg and into the Palatinate. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe himself once proclaimed: set off for Speyer. For 1,000 years, the city's landmark has towered large and mighty: the Imperial Cathedral. It is considered the largest surviving Romanesque church in Europe. Onward journey to Mainz.
Day 2: Mainz - New Year's Eve gala
Today you will get to know Mainz on a guided city tour. In the golden city on the Rhine, cultural monuments from 2,000 years of urban history come to life. The cathedral, Mainz Palace and the magnificent noble palace bear witness to the former power of the archbishops. Discover how Johannes Gutenberg revolutionised printing 550 years ago. But Mainz is also a state capital, the ZDF media metropolis and a university city. In the evening, a sophisticated New Year's Eve gala awaits you in the hotel ballroom, with a lavish buffet, music and dancing. Celebrate the arrival of the New Year in cheerful, festive spirit.
Day 3: Mainz
Spend your day in Mainz exactly as you wish. Be sure not to miss the great carnival parade, starting at 11.11 am. Around 2,500 guardsmen, Schwellköpp figures, flag bearers and musicians parade through Mainz city centre on New Year's Day. The route leads along Grosse Bleiche to Schillerplatz and on to Domplatz. On Domplatz, the New Year's concert of the Mainz Garden regiments then takes place, organised by the Mainzer Carneval-Verein and the city. Day 4: Mainz – Heidelberg – Switzerland
After breakfast, travel to romantic Heidelberg, where a local guide will already be waiting to take you on a guided walking tour. The city of love enchants its visitors with narrow lanes and a picturesque old town. Above the River Neckar, the ruined castle rises commandingly; for five centuries it was the splendid residence of the Electoral Palatinate. Return journey to Switzerland, to your drop-off point.
