Dr Fischer vo Spiez
Stefan Iten is deeply mistrustful of his wife, his sister and his neighbour Michael Camenzind. When his brother Christian returns home after many years away, Stefan becomes jealous of his wife Lisa and his brother. The suspicious fisherman is also troubled by his financial difficulties, which have arisen not least because of his short temper and his drinking. Although Lisa does everything she can to free him from his troubles, Stefan grows ever more distrustful. With needless accusations and angry outbursts, he terrorises his family. The final straw comes when his neighbour Michael Camenzind also incites the herb woman Emilie to spread a rumour: namely that Stefan's wife is having an affair with his brother Christian.
A fire makes matters even worse. Fortunately, the farmhand Guschti manages to put out the fire in time, despite the injury inflicted on him by the arsonist. In his boundless rage, Stefan sets out onto the lake despite a storm. As he stays away for days, people fear the worst.
The long-suffering Lisa learns from a letter from the herb woman Emilie that she was incited to give false information to the landlord of the Fischerstube inn. When it also turns out that Lisa's pregnancy test is positive, she collapses. The worried Christian takes her in his arms – and at that very moment Stefan returns.
Nevertheless, there is a happy ending. The arsonist is exposed and, through his wife's love, Stefan is freed from his hatred and mistrust. The farmhand Guschti, the maid Sophie and, not least, Emilie, known as «ds Chrütermiiggäli», ensure that the play does not become too heavy. By their very nature, they make sure that a certain cheerfulness still shines through in this profound piece.
