Day 1: Switzerland - Cherasco
Drive to Trino and the Principato di Lucedio rice estate, where you will enjoy a fine lunch featuring variations on risotto. This is followed by a tour of the estate: as early as the 12th century, Cistercian monks from Burgundy founded a monastery here and began to reclaim the marshy plain. In the middle of the 15th century they then introduced rice to Italy and made the Po Valley the centre of European rice cultivation. Afterwards, continue to the Langa and your hotel in Cherasco. Cherasco lies well protected on a high plateau. In the Baroque era, this pretty little town became the favourite summer retreat of the Piedmontese nobility.
Day 2: Barolo region
Today a panoramic drive through the hills of the Langhe awaits you. Enjoy a walk with your tour guide through Barolo and La Morra. In the afternoon you will explore Alba, the small capital of wine and truffles. The town is not only famous for its white truffles; it is also where probably the world's best-known chocolate hazelnut spread was invented. Your guide will lead you through the historic centre of the “City of 100 Towers”, as Alba is also known because of its medieval family towers. After the guided tour, you will have free time at your leisure. In the evening, a festive New Year's Eve dinner awaits you at the hotel.
Day 3: Grinzane Cavour Castle
With a tour guide, you will visit the medieval Grinzane Cavour Castle, set amid the vineyards and hills of the Langhe and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2014. Once the residence of Count Camillo Benso di Cavour, architect of Italian unification in the 19th century, it now houses the Regional Enoteca and a small museum dedicated to the wine and rural culture of the region. Light lunch at the small, family-run Cantina Marsaglia. During the rustic meal in the wine cellar, you can savour the fine wines and delicious treats served to you. (Optional) At 17.00 you will have the opportunity to attend the New Year's concert in the Church of San Domenico in Alba.
Day 4: Cherasco - Switzerland
Drive to Como, where you will have time to discover the town at your own pace. Return journey through the Gotthard to German-speaking Switzerland and your drop-off point.
