Along the Coasts of Dalmatia with Michel Bähni

As a EUROBUS driver, Michel Bähni has travelled to many countries. But there is one journey he always looks forward to especially: along the dream coasts of Dalmatia.

In spring, when we are enjoying the first warmer days, temperatures in Dalmatia are often already early-summery. And when the sun plays along, the coasts look like something out of a picture book. Then it is time for the first EUROBUS trips heading south. And Michel Bähni looks forward to this especially. He loves the dream coasts of Dalmatia. “The coastal road along the Makarska Riviera is unique,” he says enthusiastically. “Behind every bend, a new fascinating view awaits.”

For Michel Bähni, however, the fascination of this 8-day tour begins many kilometres earlier. “On the very first day we reach the Kvarner Bay. Here on the road to Rijeka, I get the feeling that I've arrived in Dalmatia.” The route leads along the sea with countless beautiful views to the wonderful island of Pag. And on through the enchanting UNESCO World Heritage coastal towns of Sibenik and Trogir to Neum. A highlight for many holidaymakers is on the programme the next day – Dubrovnik, the Pearl of the Adriatic. “A wonderful city,” says Michel Bähni, “and our guests get to enjoy a guided city walk.” One of his personal highlights, however, is already on the way there. “On the drive over the bridge to the Pelješac peninsula, perhaps the most beautiful panoramic view in Dalmatia awaits us.”

Culture and Cuisine – the Soul of Dalmatia

It is the scenic beauty of Dalmatia that fascinates Michel Bähni again and again. But if you want to get to the heart of this landscape, he recommends embracing its cultural and culinary treasures. “Throughout the whole trip, my guests have the chance to discover something new,” he explains. “We stop on the island of Pag to taste local products in a typical cheese dairy. We visit an agriturismo with local specialities. If you like, you can visit Croatia's best-known wine region on the Pelješac peninsula and sample fine wines. Or visit an oyster farm.” Speaking of good food – can Michel Bähni recommend one restaurant in particular? “No,” he shakes his head, “there are countless good restaurants on the tour. But I can reveal one thing: the best cevapcici are to be found in the city of Mostar.”

The Journey Is the Destination

After all his years as a coach driver, there is one thing Michel Bähni knows for certain. “It's not only about the wonderful places we visit.” For him personally, it is just as important to be able to pass on his enthusiasm for travelling and for the region to his guests. “I'm delighted when the guests really join in.” And this joy in turn rubs off on the guests. “That often creates its own positive dynamic and turns a group of travellers into a real community.” What remains are many lovely memories and sometimes friendships too.
